Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ
What is Portland Cantonese Play + Learn (PCP&L Inc.)?
PCP&L is a community-based, non-profit program that supports families with young children (ages 0–6) in learning, using, and celebrating the Cantonese language and culture. We are the only early childhood Cantonese learning program in Oregon, serving over 200 families across the Portland Metro and surrounding areas.
Why is this work important?
Chinese migrants from Canton served as the pioneers + backbone of Chinese American communities across the country, yet in Oregon today we represent an underinvested population. Existing programs focus exclusively on Mandarin, creating a void for Cantonese speaking families. The consequences of this exclusion are profound, leading to rapid intergenerational language loss, cultural erosion, and isolation for caregivers in early parenthood.
PCPL ensures children grow up with access to their heritage language, cultural identity, and a strong sense of belonging during the most critical years for language development.
Whom does PCP&L serve?
Primarily Children ages 0–6, but older children, siblings, parents and grandparents are always welcome at our gatherings. Or goal is to intentionally give whole families time to build relationships with one another, participating as a unit and reinforcing shared belonging.
Families across the Portland Metro and beyond
A diverse community: 80%+ biracial families and 50% speaking a third language at home
Families seeking culturally affirming, community-based early learning
What programs does PCP&L offer?
Monthly Play + Learn: Cantonese language learning through songs, stories, crafts, and play
Cultural Holiday Celebrations: Lunar New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival
Weekend Immersion Classes: Teacher-led Cantonese instruction for children (and adults)
Community Activities: Cooking, games, outdoor play, and family gatherings
Junior Lion Dance Program: In partnership with White Lotus Lion Dance
Intergenerational Connections: Activities connecting children with Cantonese elders
Do I have to speak Cantonese to attend?
No. We serve families of all fluency levels. Did you know that many who have not spoken for years or ever at all, have found the space to finally start talking in our group? You can learn too!
Can I still attend if I don’t have any children but want to expand my Cantonese skills and/or connect with community ?
For the children’s playgroup, we keep attendance limited to parents, caregivers, and their families. This helps us maintain a safe and comfortable environment for the kids and protects their privacy, especially since our programs involve young children.
That said, we have a lively adult Cantonese group! There are number of ways to connect:
1 - You can find us on Meetup to join events like mahjong, coffee chat, hikes, eating, karaoke, and volunteering. https://www.meetup.com/cantonesesocialpdx
2 - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cantonesesocialpdx
3 - If you’re looking to further your Canto skills, there are weekend classes with the CCBA on Saturday mornings as well. Please reach out for more information.
